Blood Mountain.

Thanks for the info. Anyone know if fires are permitted at the new site, or is that within the Blood Mountain "no-fires" zone?

According to the Carolina Mountain Club newsletter, this relocation was done to allow the Slaughter Gap area to regenerate (this is a heavily impacted area). Several new tent sites, each of which will support about three backpacker tents, have been constructed along the relocation to replace the tenting areas in Slaughter Gap. Trails other than the AT will also be relocated so that the area can restore itself.

Yes, the new site is within the "No Fires" exclusion of the Blood Mountain Wilderness area.

Good. I was at Slaughter Gap in Dec '03 and it the picture doesn't begin to show how messed up the site was at the time. I can only imagine how much worse it is now. Really awful. Glad they've done the relo.

Yes, I think the site is http://www.georgia-atclub.org/ -- the comparison pics from 1996 and 2003 make quite a statement.

Thanks for sharing this info. They were working on this when we went through in November 2003. I agree that Slaughter Gap has to be one of the worst impacted areas I've ever seen on the AT.
