Default Section day hiking Monson to Katadin?

My sister and friends will be hiking the 100 Mile Wilderness this summer in day/section hikes. i am the Shuttle Boy! I am concerned about where to drop them off and meet them on the old paper company roads which are not well marked. Can anyone give me advice about roads in the area? ... as well as lodging and food??

Send a PM to Warren Doyle here at WB who is intimately familiar with how to access some of Maine's more obscure roads.

Actually, you'd do well to call the good folks at Shaw's Boarding House in Monson who do this sort of driving and shuttling all the time.

Contact Buddy Ward, he runs 7 Pines Shuttle Service out of Monson.

A couple of years ago I section hiked about half of the 100 mile wilderness. When you go to the Jo Mary campground you have to pay a per person fee to get it. They have pretty good maps that show all the roads and where the trail goes through.

Also keep in mind that the logging trucks have the right of way, they drive over 60 on dirt roads, and they won't slow down for you.

You will be able to hear the logging trucks from a long ways away, personally I've never encountered one while crossing the roads, only heard a few from a great distance. If you have enough senses to hike, they're not a problem.

Have you looked at my sub-forum? Lots of info there on how to dayhike the AT thru the 100 Mile Wilderness. Especially ME AT I, II & III! Go to post#11 and hit on Good link and make sure you hit on my trip reports. Unfortunately, I was not on the hike with my friends from Abol Bridge to JoMary Road, but when I get back to doing that section I would make a three night mini (modified) backpack staying at Nahmakanta Camp the first night and Whitehouse Landing the 2nd night before exiting out to JoMary Road. Then I would repeat the way I did it utilizing the facilities at JoMary Lake Campground and schedule two dayhikes. That gets you to KI ROad. Then with careful planning you would need an overnight at Cloud Pond and a car out on Elliottsville Road. So research my trip reports and have fun!
