    Default razor blades

just wondering if anyone takes a razor blade for a knife rather than a big knife. probably not a big weight difference or size difference but i was just wondering if anyone does this. if so how do you carry the razor blade in your pack?

A good idea for a survival kit, an even better idea is a #15 scalpel blade with a cut-down handle to fit. As a primary knife however, not a smart idea at all. A disposable knife seems about as smart as a disposable tent of sleeping bag.

I like this one for A.T hiking:

Not perfect but pretty good for the price and weight.

i carry single edge blades in emergency kit. i keep the blade in a WIDGET. i got it in the paint section. its for scraping paint off glass.
you can sharpen a stick with it, if you use it like a draw knife (spoke shaver)

I carry a utility knife blade in a 1 oz bottle used for measuring fuel for my alcohol stove. Or you could make a plastic sheath. Replace it or mail yourself a new blade as needed. I Also carry a razor blade for first aid items. Made a "sheath" from plastic and fasten it closed by tape or a rubber band.

Razor blades don’t have handles, knifes do. From a safety viewpoint it makes much more sense to have a knife, less chance that you will cut yourself. And for a survival situation a knife is one thing you should always have. A locking blade knife is best as it reduces the chance of cutting yourself as it locks in place and won’t fold up on you at the wrong time.

I don’t feel comfortable without a knife on me. I have a small locking folder made by Buck that has served me well for years.

sheath knives are better- the blade will not fold up, ever.

    Default Another option

Gerber makes a nice locking razor knife that measures 1" x 3" x 1/4" folded.

It takes standard razor blades used in construction , has a belt clip, and the blades are easily changed with a coin.

I carry one for work. Weighs 2.2 ounces.

i actually almost bought that last night because it was exactally what i was looking for but thought i would ask a few other hikers on their experiance and ideas. its at wal mart for 9.46 i believe and looks exactly like a money clip pretty much. handle folds out pretty nice although it didnt seem like 2 ounces when i was playing with it in the store. the knife sofaking mentioned looks real nice also because of the fixed blade and is half the weight although it is more expensive and with the gerber you just replace the razor..

the crkt doesnt look very comfortable on the hand but i can wrap some duct tape around the handle.

the handle is wrapped in nylon cord, the choil has a finger groove on bottom and ridges on top and at the tip of the spine(for precision work). the blade has a single grind edge. the sheath has a multi-posistioned clip and can also be worn on a belt or as a necklace. i really like mine.
