How about maps. You guys have any good sources of maps you would like to relay to potential hikers. I know they're always looking for ways to cut costs, and maps can get expensive if you buy them from Retail. Are there sources to get Trail maps (detailed) Topos from? Downloads, web sites, emails etc.....?

Go to www.topozone.com to get free topos. You'll have to spend a few days or weeks finding all the right ones and then printing them out, and the trail as marked on the topos might not correspond to where the trail actually goes, but they are free.

    Topozone is great.

Not free, but anyone who wants the real-deal USGS topo maps without paying the premium many resellers want should go to http://store.usgs.gov/ -- direct order from USGS at $6 a map for 1:24,000 series and $7 a map for 1:100,000 series. $5 per order S&H.

On TopoZone, clicking on the "Map/Photo Info" button will tell you what quad you're looking at.

Obviously, ordering 1:24k maps for the entire trail on a thru-hike would be prohibitive. Haven't tried the 1:100k maps, they may be useful.

I have also found a good source in www.maptech.com , I hate to give this source away, cause it's sorta been a secret. Don't know how many of you know about this. They have downloadable maps from the 1890's - 1960's. All of very high quality. If you have a fast modem or DSL, Cable hook up, they're fast to download. Dial-up takes a little longer...right! I share....look 'um up and enjoy....Kozmic Zian@
