you need to use a side-cut style can-opener

can't help you - my choice was to chop the top off at the third ring under the rim so that I could get my hand to fit into the pot to wipe it out after use - without the rim the can may get bent a little easier but it is very easy to round it back out using ones hands

if I had to leave the rim on I would try to scribe a groove on the inside of the rim where I wanted to have the top removed - scribe it several times in the same place then scribe an X across the top - break the top at the center of the X and work the breaks to the rim then work the 1/4 sections of the top up and down to break the top from the rim - this is similar to the technique for making soda can stoves - unfortunately I am no longer able to fine work like that so I don't even try thus the chop the top off and even it up with sissors approach that I use

I chop it like HOI does but fit it with a new rim so that it's still rigid and doesn't get bent up as much.

I have two heini cans,(they are impossible to find in my area) so I don't want to screw them up experimenting. Is there a step by step instruction anywhere?

    Sure. Sift through this thread.

It's all in there. If you have any technique or method questions ask them here and I'll be glad to answer them for everyone.

I think it is named the "Good Cook Safe Cut" can opener, I found mine at Walmart and use it for all cans at the house. About $10 and worth it.
