You gotta grind that stuff up really well. Otherwise it gets kinda gritty.
I'm not really a hiker, I just play one on White Blaze.

    Bacon isn't kosher.
Neither am I, but I still have one foot in the "old testament" only "old" to modern day Christians.
Bacon, however, is, one of the major food groups:

    1) Sugar
    2) Fat
    3) Salt

Oh, sorry, that's only the three major food groups for habitual HIKERS .

IMO, the best bacon is whatever Matt himself cooks...while we're out on the Trail.

Get two steaks and freeze em. Hike out and by dinner time the next day they're ready to cook. If you don't know how to cook a steak on an alcohol stove ask Matty. Cook both steaks at the shelter with some fresh vegetables (broccoli does well in a backpack...). Eat one, and half of the other, then groan and complain about how stuffed you are to the other hikers at the shelter as they drool into their ramen. Priceless.
