    Question Laurel gap-GSMNP

    Anyone been to this shelter. Its a couple miles off the AT in the Smokies

    Yup, I was there May 27, 2008 along with a swarm of gnats, so I moved on to BC #47 where I camped.
    The trail was here before we arrived, and it will still be here when we are gone...enjoy it now, and preserve it for others that come after us

    typical Smokies shelter complete with fireplace and bear cage. No privy. One of two shelters on the BMT.

    It's in a very nice location and is sparsly used by Smokies standard.

    I think Russell Field and Collins still have the fences up. Hopefully they will be coming down as well soon.

    I section the Smokies last week and Davenport Gap shelter also still has the chain linked fence. It did have the covered front so you could sit out front if it was raining instead of sitting behind a fence like you were in jail.

    The park service needs to spend a couple of summers conditioning the bears to avoid the shelters. I think a few M-80s would take care of it. Might save the bears' lives. As the saying goes, "A fed bear is a dead bear".

    the spring is pretty good there. also there is a better stream straight past the first one a little ways.
