i use a mora and love it, you cant beat it for the price either. its light, sharp as hell and strong. personally the mora number 1 is my favorite but i know a lot of people like the ones with the plastic red and green handles too.

i really like the mora's (especially the price and weight). wish i could find one who's sheath attaches left to right on a belt instead of up and down
i mean:

Yea, I think a Ka-Bar is too much for the trail. All you need is a small knife of some kind. I carry a swiss army knife, under 3 ounces in weight.

I agree, although mine runs closer to 4 oz. He was looking for a Kbar. This is a good price. Those hiking with him will be safe. If a bear attacks and he pulls it out, everyone will have plenty of time to run away while the bear is lolrof
For splitting wood I would recommend a good strong knife like a Swamp Rat or Busse or Scrap Yard. They are heavy but quite up to the task of cutting anything. I have split wood and shaved kindling with mine. They will cost more than a KBAR though.

go to an army surplas store. you bound to find one there.
Sometimes you need a long blade for kitchen and fire duties.
My Opinel has a 4 inch blade and weighs around 1.5 oz. I haven't found anything that compares weight wise.
They are inexpensive as well, but they are carbon steel so can rust. They sharpen easy and hold an edge.
I carry a very light sharpener as well.

My trail shapener. I carry this on long trips or when car camping. Weighs approx. 2 oz. It folds.
Knives get dull on the trail. I've sharpened kitchen knives, hatchets and machetes with it as well.
Of course, do not try to sharpen while dry, must be wet.

I agree. Although I take a machete when I kayak or car camp as it's nice to be able to split and chop, I wouldn't consider anything over a few onces when backpacking.
I can almost always find enough smaller branches, pine cones, ... to cook my food.
I also only pack inexpensive knives as either I loose them or someone borrows them and doesn't return them.

Hiking with a K-bar???? Why would ANYONE want to tote that thing with them? Feeling a little insecure maybe? I used a 1/2 ounce Gerber knife and it was all I ever needed? Why do some of you make everything so complicated and HEAVY??? LOL
I would never carry that heavy a knife. I want to save the weight for my computer.
need on the AT is a typical razor blade.
but if you are looking for a bushcraft knife surf
Blind Horse Knive's Bushcrafter...
I can't recommend any knives for fighting or that type
but the bushcrafter is excellent at dowelling kindling
and notching for traps. The price is good for what appears
to be a custom knife-you get knife and sheath for $100
Its a US company too

Kanati, Yeah, that sounds like a KBar. I have one, but never carry it. It's a killing machine and that's about all its good for. Almost scary to handle, razor sharp on both the clip and the blade. You can slice yourself if not careful.
I like the Mora for a car camping knife, a Wyoming and home-made butcher knives for dressing game and a large hatchet for firewood and woodcraft where appropriate. On the trail, I carry nothing but a SAK Classic - the tiny one. The blade sucks, but it works OK. As everone has noted, you can dress all the firewood you want without any tool at all.

Take what knife catches your fancy. Remember, you have to carry it.
