What?!? I'm at a loss... I was talking about chasing away black bears from the garbage at my house, which happens to be about 3 miles from the Pine Swamp Shelter... Brown noser? At the risk of flaunting my stupidity or irrationality, your reply to my post makes no sense at all. Are you this friendly on the trail?

You are right Atmooney. My apologies Atmooney, that comment was not intended for you. I accidentally copied your screen name. If could edit the post I’d fix it.

stayed there last night, no bugs, no bears, the beaver lodge looks bigger than ever.
    again, privy is nasty.... expected
water was orange, flowed from one smaller swamp area into the beaver pond. aqua mira= so far so good after 24 hours....
the trail to the water was hard to spot in the dusk, there is a blow down right as it leaves the main area.

I was there this past weekend and it was clean and bug free but there were quite a few mice in the shelter. None made it into my pack or where I slept but they were clearly visable on the wood inside the shelter. With regards to the water, I filled up before hand so I cant personally speak on that. However, I heard the water at the swamp (where another hiker filled up), was very nasty.

I was there last night. Water was flowing clean and plentiful, but the rocks were covered in ice. Amazing moonrise looked like a spotlight in the shelter.
There were a number of small blowdowns on the way to the privy and to the water, but nothing you couldn't get around.
Some critter was howling and screeching early in the morning. Sounded like a howler-monkey, but now I think it might have been a chupacabra.

The huge moon was amazing, and what a cool place to see it from.

Well - I happened to camp in Pine Swamp Lean To on Tuesday night which makes me (I'm pretty sure) the last person i this thread to camp there - I thought it was in fine shape compared to a couple of other CT shelters I stayed in - all of them could use a little spruce up esp. the privies - the privy at 10 mile shelter has been destroyed and needs work (vandals?)

oops - missed Deb's post - last night eh? cool. I hiked from Race Brook Falls Tr. (MA) to NY (Hoyt Rd) this past week - didn't see ANY backpackers - glad you got out - I thought I was the only one that liked post-holeing through that soft snow and trudging along the flooded river

Didn't see a soul but two day hikers just off 41 in Salisbury. Solitude is the best reason for hiking off season. I did see some trash and evidence of a campfire at Limestone Spring, but I was packed too heavy to haul out much more than a beer bottle. The shelter book said someone had celebrated a birthday a few days earlier.

Thanks for doing what you can. I know the Maintainers and Ridgerunners appreciate it, this area sees ALOT of use.

I spent the night in a hammock behind the shelter on May 6/7. No issues to report. I'd guess that there are no longer beavers in residence in the pond, as the water level looked pretty low.

I shot some video of the area:
