How much do you need? I've got about 10-11 ounces here I could part with. 900fp.

When you make something outta down is it messy. That is a pretty expensive investment to have blownin round the house?

It is actually a lot more messy to take the down out of something to then re-stuff it with down. I've done that.

Use a room like a bathroom - something small. Once you get the down in and sew it shut, the clean up is easier.

This technique worked well for me, I still did it in the garage though:

I'm not sure on that setup Way more complicated than it needs to be

Down gear making "can" be messy, but its not too hard to keep clean.

Here is what I do. I fluff the down until its an even density, then use a small bowl to increment it out. I compress that down into a paper siphon and stuff it to the back of a baffle. Once I've filled a full side of baffles I sew the seam shut. I then take time to fluff each evenly before putting in sewn-thru baffles.

I use a clear rubbermaid tub and fluff the down until it takes up about half the container. I empty a 3oz bag of down in 5 or 6 steps. I carefully pull the top off and fill the bowl evenly. I really think evenly filled baffles make for a quality piece of gear. It's just easier to portion out a few workable amounts per baffle instead of handfuls of compressed down.

I just stuff a paper tube until I get the weight I want, and blow it into the baffle. It doesn't make that big of a mess. I should add that all I've ever done with it is add down to a sleeping bag. It doesn't make that big of a mess either, if you're careful and move slow. A lot of the 800 fill down from Seven Wonders is huge, like quarter to half dollar size, good stuff. But I've never seen or read anything bad about the down from Thru Hiker or Speers.

You can buy bulk down from featherind.com. If you're willing to buy enough, there are some good deals to be found there. If you only need a few ounces Speer Hammocks is the place to buy; 900 fp and a fantastic guy to work with.

I stuff down inside of a closed room and in a tent. When it floats around in the tent it has no where to hide! When I made my first quilt I used this tactic and don't think I lost any down. It work so well.

I didn't realize bulk down was so cheap. If I wanted to add more down to a 35* bag, how many ounces would bring it down to around 20* or so? I sleep really cold and seem to get cold once temps dip into the 40s.

I did this. If your bag is sewn thru then the baffels are only meant for so much fill. If you put too much down in there then the baffels will have a concave shape to them and you'll feel the ridges on your legs rather than a blanket effect. IMO, my bag was flawed after I added the down.
