    Default Fresh fruit

A fresh fish to WB and was just wondering the availability of fresh fruit along the AT. Not wild fruits like berries and such but the availability of fruit in trail towns at markets and stores along the AT. Apologies if a thread already exists that answers this question.

You'll be able to find fresh fruit in any town with even a modest-sized grocery store. It'll be harder to find at resupply stops that consist of just one small general store, in which case, fruit juice is a life-saver.

For taking on the trail out of town, nothing beats oranges!

I criticized my son for bringing a bag of oranges on the trail 2 years ago, but then they were mighty good especially when the water was scarce.

After hiking from Gorham in 90F heat found oranges someone had left hanging on a tree at the road crossing at Pinkham Notch - they were the best oranges I ever ate!

sloopjonboswell... I had to giggle at the scurvy comment. Cedar tea is a great thing to make so you can tell your mamma you won't get scurvy on the trail... lol.

Citrus skins tend to turn into petrified relics, so I pack them out, but most other "fruit leavins" will rot fairly fast, so they go out in the woods.
Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass - it's about learning how to dance in the rain!

I've heard banana peels should be packed out. That they don't decompose well at all as they are tropical.

they decompose just fine in my backyard. chucking them is fine; just make sure that they are out of sight.

Last year I got to hungering for fresh fruit. Um, yea, you needed to get there early in the day or the hikers in front of you will likely have cleaned out the days supply. Being a section hiker it wasn't a great thing, & once i realized the thrus needed it more than me, I didn't buy even when I could. But yes, the AT store owners know what hikers like, so it can be had.
