    Default Mile Hike Club

The Mile Hike Club has a new member - woo hoo!!!

Buckwheat, at the summit of Mt. Lafayette in the Franconia Range, Franconia Notch, NH. This self-portrait was taken 26 May 09.

Eighteen months ago, I could not finish mowing my lawn without stopping to rest, owing to a 35-year pack-a-day smoking habit (total packs = 12,775). Yesterday, I climbed a mile high mountain after kicking that sorry habit cold turkey.

Anyone who says you can't do it is wrong.

    Hike Stats
    7.86 miles
    5,291 feet max elevation
    5,560 feet total ascent

Did you start in a cave or under the ocean? How is total ascent greater than the elevation?

Congrats on the hike and giving up smoking! I don't smoke, but I chew half a can of Copenhagen a day and I wish I could quit. Take care!

Total ascent accounts for the fact that I went down the side of Mt. Lafayette for some way, and then back up Mt. Lincoln (and so forth as I crossed the ridge of these mountains).

My GPS keeps track of that.

Rock on! What food type did you crave/fixate on?

Interesting question. Food has never really interested me much, but I did discover upon quitting just how much smoking was retarding my appetite

I went from 2 meals a day (light lunch and dinner) to 3 meals a day (light breakfast, heavy lunch, heavy dinner). And within the first 3 months, I gained about 25 pounds - all of it fat around the midsection. Not pretty, I have to tell you.

It's one of the reasons that you will see me hiking with a 30-pound pack. I use the weight to make the caloric burn greater; I'm prepared for just about anything even on day hikes; and I'm keeping my body in long-distance hiking shape. Plus, when I hike with a light pack, or without a pack at all, I feel like I'm walking on air.

It's worked. I've dropped about 15 of those pounds and am turning the other 10 into muscle mass mainly in my legs and ass. As long as the knees and ankles hold out, I think hiking is probably going to be the best way to maintain my physique, such as it is.

    Cheers,
    Buckwheat
