Default Water at Shooting Star Shelter

Despite what the 2009 End-to-end guide says, there is no water pump at Shooting Star. The water source is either a dismal little pool just above the pump pipe, or down the ravine in the other direction (east) about 400 meters.

Have had the same experience over the years with lack of water at SS. There is a stream which the Long Trail crosses one mile south. Several years ago, while I was staying at SS, an athletic and friendly hiker actually hiked the one mile and back and brought back enough water for five of us to share - he was a hiker AND a trail angel!

Jay Camp and Laura Woodward are the last shelters with good water. You can easily fill up at either one and it should get you to the end.
