Default Early days of cell phones...late 90's

Once asked by a city gal while I was packing up to go hiking ....
Gal: "Don't you have a cell phone?"
Me: " If I need one I'm not going!"
Gal: " But arn't you afraid to be out there all by yourself?"
    Me: " No..that's why I go"
    Gal: " I wouldn't do that"
    Me: " See ya...
Do one thing everyday...that makes you happy...

Sitting in a hot springs in Pagosa Springs near the CDT one year with a bunch of Harley bikers.
When they found out what we were doing, they asked "what do you see up there that is so special?"
We said that just today we were on a high peak looking down at the snow capped mountains for one of the best views of our life and that we had also seen a herd of 40 elk the day before.
They replied: "Couldn't you do that easier from an airplane?"
Don't let your fears stand in the way of your dreams

My winter season sport is backcountry and slackcountry downhill skiing. When I revealed this to my physician, he was dumbfounded that anyone would even consider this. He asked, "Don't you hit trees?" In my wisest-a$$ remark to him I retorted, "Yes, if I don't turn!"

aren't you afraid you will be eaten by a bear is probably the most frequently question, at least for me, but this one was a little special to me...

brooklyn-ite: aren't you afraid you will be eaten by a bear?

me: um, tell me again how many times you have been mugged

brooklyn-ite: ten, no eleven, counting last week

me: i have never been mugged, robbed, eaten, or even seen by a bear

Default Are you out here for the night?

The dumbest question I have heard is ...

"Are you out here for the night?"

    that frequent question is;
why do you even ask? you are going to do what you want to do anyway.

    that frequent answer is:
not when i ask for IT

    that's when the trouble starts

He was protecting it. Don't give away too much info.

Met a guy at Muscrat Creek Shelter. He was in bad shape and was praising this other guy who had carried his gear up the hill from GA. He was complaining that no one had told him the AT had so many climbs. His knees were bad. He wanted me to spend the night with him and his new found friend. He wanted me to use one of the spare sleeping bags that had been left in the shelter. I politely declined and got the F out of there.
I'm not really a hiker, I just play one on White Blaze.

"So do you carry everything you need?"

"I guess you carry canned foods?"

"How can you possibly carry enough water for three weeks?"

Elderly Hiker asked if there was an elevator on those 700 steps at Amicalola Falls.

I told her that if she walked down them, she might get a free ride back up the road

After I told a friend that I had discovered a bear track in the dirt next to where I had stopped for lunch, she (with wide eyes and astonished voice) : "What if that bear had come back and attacked you?"

I was hiking on the Benton MacKaye Trail in the Cahutta wilderness in the fall. It was deer hunting season and the only people I had seen all that week were the occassional deer hunter. Needing to get a ride into Blue Ridge so I could get a shutle back to Springer, I reluctantly flagged down a hunter in a jeep. I told him I was hiking the trails, and that I was trying to get back to my car. That is when the questions started.

Him: So, I hear there is a trail around here that runs all the way to Maine.
Me: Yeah, Ive heard of that trail. The AT.
Him: I hear there are people CRAZY enough to walk that whole thing.
Me: Yeah, Ive heard that too.
Him: Have you ever MET one of those crazy people?
Me: Well, actually... I have met a few.
Him: Really??? Where could I meet one??
Me: If you drive me into town, I will introduce you to one.

He was so happy, he drove me all the way to Amicalola just so he could tell all his friends he had actually MET one of those CRAZY hikers.

Them: (almost daily at first) You LET your daughter go hiking in the woods?
    Me: Let?
    Them: Where do they stay?
    Me: They?
Them: You LET her go ALONE? You mean she's not with a group?
Me: Yes, I LET her go ALONE. She'll likely find a group. Or not.
Them: You mean there are strangers out there?
    Me: Not any more.
    Them: Where does she sleep?
Me: Depends on where she is when she's done for the day..
Them: Does she call you every day?
Me: Only if she wants to, but generally I hear from her every other week or so. Mostly with instructions for mail drops.
Them: How far has she walked?
Me: Oh, about 2000 miles so far.

That's about when I get the eye roll and they walk off..
