    Default Spam Galore

We seem to have an epidemic of advertizing/spam messages. I'm dutifully reporting them as I find them. May I ask how this is handled by the moderators? Just curious.

I agree. Seems like way too many small time entrepreneurs who have any sort of "hiker" product or even a "new version" alcohol stove lands here to hawk their products. Boring.........

perhaps we draw the line when spammers that have no interest in the AT or hiking post links to non-hiking products?

Maybe WB should provide a merchandising thread and charge a fee for it's use

Non-backpacking spam is zapped as soon as it is seen, with the offender permanently banned and all posts deleted from that account.

If the post references a new piece of gear or a new service we tend to let it ride a time or two. This benefits the membership with exposure to new products and services and helps some of the cottage industry people get the word out.

If the posts become repetitive or excessive we usually let the person know they can purchase a spot on the banner and/or place a link in the Links section.

By the title, I thought this was going to be a cooking thread.

Or a cool Monty Python game...
If people spent less time being offended and more time actually living, we'd all be a whole lot happier!

To my mind, there is a huge difference between someone who is a member, then creates a hiking related item that they mention here, and someone who has a computer generated account that autoposts spam for who knows what product. The first is an offer for a genuine service. The second is clearly spam.

When someone's first post is for their product, even if it is hiking related, that strikes me as a weak attempt at free advertising, even if it doesn't necessarily count as spam.

Since no one would read it, it would be a waste of both space and time. Any advertising needs to be where everyone will see it or no one will pay for it.

Well she is! about your age.

Everyone knows you fry Spam and drink the juice. If you stab it, and eat it cold, you get a messy chin.

Wait a minute! Aren't we always looking for a deal on a wedding dress to hike in?
