    Default Deep Gap Parking

We are hiking from unicoi gap ga to Deep Gap, NC.
The Deep Gap, NC parking area is 6.2 miles on forrest service road 71 off of highway 64.

Has anyone parked there before? Do the lock the gate on the service road? If they do what time do they lock and unlock it.

    Thanks for the help

    Yes

    Yes

They lock the gate during the winter. Not an issue now.
The trail was here before we arrived, and it will still be here when we are gone...enjoy it now, and preserve it for others that come after us

Yes, I've parked there many times for up to three days. No problems at all. It's pretty far off the main highway- to far for troublemakers/vandals. Egads is right about the gate. Seems to me the gate halfway down the road is locked from Noverberish to March? Have a great hike.

How well is FS 71 marked off of Hwy 64? Does anyone know if the gate that was mentioned above is locked the last week of October as that is when we are planning our hike?

I believe I saw a sign on Hwy 64 last weekend that said "Deep Gap". One of those brown signs that indicate recreational activities. It is west of the road that leads to Standing Indian Mtn Campground, probably by 2 or 3 miles( or more ????)

Yes, it's marked USFS 71 on a small sign on the right side of the highway. If you have a GPS, input the intersection of Hwy 64 and Deep Gap Road, and it will take you right there. It is just past the county line, you can't miss it (even without GPS).

Do you need any special type of vehicle to make it the parking area at Deep Gap- and what about leaving a car there for 2 weeks?

a 4WD isn't neccesary and as far as I know there isn't a time limit on parking there.

In a few days I'll be hiking from Deep Gap to Tesnatee Gap in GA. I wanted to see if anyone had any updates on water or trail conditions heading into GA?

FWIW, I'd leave my car at Deep Gap and hike from Tesnatee to my car.

    To Long2bhiking,
I dropped my car off at deep gap Saturday May 7. It is a 6 mile gravel road that I could have made in my 1999 Honda Accord! But I took my wife's Saturn SUV because we live in Florida and her car is newer. Anyway, coming from the direction of Hayesville NC on 64 or from Hiawassee GA on 75/175 it is about 17 miles from the intersection of 175 and 64. The road to Deep Gap will be on the right and there is a sign just before the turn. It starts of paved so don't think you have the wrong road. It turns to gravel very soon. It is in great shape except for one washout about 1 mile into the road. We parked the car there for 6 days (got a ride to Woody gap to start our hike) and when we got to the parking lot our car was there like we had been away from it for an hour! I would recommend that lot to anyone. The drive down is a bit long though.

long2bhiking, I totally got off in the wrong direction for you. Plenty of water, especially at all the shelters along the way. They are all triklers, though. Nothing really large or deep enough to put more than one tired foot at a time in! The trail is pretty much nothing but up and down. I think the goal of the A.T. down here is to hit pretty much every peak in the area, and then go back down every peak!!

Good afternoon! Is there any good camping at Deep Gap Parking? One of my friends has a popup camper and I like to tent camp. We are interested in staying for the weekend to provide some trail magic and do some car camping. We usually do trail magic at Gooch Gap, but wanted to try somewhere different. Thank you!
