Default Walk in the Woods Movie

Whatever happened to Bill Bryson's movie?

I first heard about it in 2004, there was sporadic information for several years. I know there was some interest back in 2004 because I read the article (along with everyone else). That was the last solid information I ever received. The last rumor I heard was that they were filming, although not on the AT. Anyone know what the story is? Just another trail rumor?

I hope it's just a rumour- I don't want to watch a movie about a failed attempt at a thru hike. I kind of liked his book, but a movie? I don't think so. It would be pretty boring.

The production lost momentum. In 2006 the producers had been working with the ATC to obtain permits to film but that was the last news I had on pre-production. I think the last word was Paul Newman and Robert Redford decided they were too old to play the leads but maybe Redford was still interested in producing the film. That was a couple years ago.

There is some info on the Internet Movie Database: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1178665/

If they ever do make the movie I want to play Katz. I will even put in a rewrite that allows me to have my own beer money. If I had to beg Bryson for beer money in each town he would have died in one of those snow storms he wrote about.

The imdb-pro page was updated on 9/17/09 and Redford is still in as Bill Bryson.

May have been updated recently, but both those articles are still dated Jan 2008.

The project was back-burnered after Paul Newman died.

Plus, unless things have changed very recently, they still don't have anything near a finished story/script.

For those interested, yeah, this is gonna happen, but I don't think we'll see it anytime soon.

    Default It'll come out...

It'll come out the year I retire and probably be a smash hit. Because of the movie, I'll start my thru hike in the first year that over 25,000 attempt their thru.

Having thru-hiked the first full year after the book was published, I can say that it did cause a lot of interesting... characters.... to take to the trail. It was not all together a bad thing.

Good reason to retire right now and start hiking.

Default UK coverage of the book

This past May and June whilst backpacking across Northwestern Scotland it seemed that everyone I met asked me if I had read "Walk in the Woods". They seemed to really like the book. I didn't shoot down their enthusiasm, but neither did I comment much on it.

Bryson's Notes from a Small Island did for Scotland's hiking community what A Walk in the Woods did for the AT. Spread a good deal of over-the-top satire about the area, but also got a lot of folks interested that had never heard of those English and Scottish trails.

I first heard of Bryson from the British Royal Marines before A Walk in the Woods was released. They mostly love him in Britain.

I would gladly go watch the movie.
If people spent less time being offended and more time actually living, we'd all be a whole lot happier!
