We're over 200 on the spreadsheet. WOOHOO!!

There are alot of hikers in the 'unsure' column and alot of question marks. If you firm up your info and would like it updated on the spreadsheet let me know.

Hope everyone is enjoying the planning process, including the purchase of gear...

See you on the trail (next year),

We're over 300 now (302 to be exact)..........If you want to update anything just let me know.

Time is getting short for everyone (and very short for some)...you'll be on the trail before you know it.

Don't forget some sunscreen (until the leaves start appearing anyway).

    Good Luck and Have Fun!

Ummm... I'm not sure if I fit into the 2010 thru hiker listing. By the time the 2011 thru hiker listing is started, I'll be on the trail. Since I'm starting in 2010 but finishing in 2011, maybe I'll be in both? In any case....

Chris (don't have trail name but you can put: "A Guy Called Zoooma")
    SOBO - Direction
September 23 - Estimated Start Date
Yes - Approach Trail - yes or no
    Fall 2010 -> Winter 2011 - additional info

you didn't ask location but everyone has one, hopefully it's not automatically entered 'cause mine would say:
    "Homeless former Alaskan from NJ"
but I'm currently located in: Charleston, SC
(if it's an automatic dealie then I'll have to change my info.)

I'll be hiking for charity -- to raise money to help give people in Haiti clean water to drink. Haiti's the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere and it's devastating to see how so many are forced to live down there. They need all the help they can get

I've been listening to "Chef Rich"'s trailphone updates. He's just north of Franklin this week. Talks about no snow to knee deep drifts, depending on which side of a mountain he's on. Orignially he mentioned having the trail to himself, doesn't sound like he's seeing many thu-hikers in the shelters with him.

The next busy day looks to be 15 Mar (12 starting) and after that April Fools Day (13 starting).

Im new to this forum and am tryin to get settled. I'm leaving in 8 days and am.... anxious. 1000 questions that i could have asked but... The top three:
do i need a stove or are the trial towns sufficient for dining and dashing?
does the bounce box work well?
    boots or shoes?

Is this an average number, higher or lower than previous years? Just curious.

To the best of my knowledge, first time over 500 on WhiteBlaze (at least since I've been doing the list). Each year it has increased.

I am planning on a SOBO hike leaving sometime in September. I am also hiking for a cause. I am hiking for the Fsher House Foundation to support military families. I am so ready to be out there and hiking.

By far the most common mode of transport for getting to the trail is by car. There is ample parking along the trail (at trailheads leading to the trail proper)—in the more populated areas there is usually an entrance parking lot every 10 miles or so. Be sure not to leave anything valuable/visible in your car while gone (especially nice hiking equipment!). The Appalachian Trail is not set up for many circular routes, so you may want to arrange transportation to and from the trail at your start and end points. You can try to get off the trail near a town and try and pay someone to take you back to your car, but it's a much better plan to have a good friend or relative responsible for your transport!
