absolutely. I finished up my thru-hike there a few days ago and I saw two in one and a half days of hiking.
"you know a dream like this seems kind of vaguely ludicrous and completely unattainable. And for anybody who's on the downside of advantage and relying purely on courage: It's possible."
Usually good idea to always hang your food, just in case.
Hiked Maryland this summer and had a bear encounter near Harpers Ferry. Two of them sniffed around the tent one night. They simply left. Our food was hung far away.
Totem, I hope that there is some sarcasm in your remark! It wasn't horrible. The question was ares there bears in the area and the answer is yes.
The answer is yes, there are bears in the Maryland section. I live about 8 miles from the trailhead which leads you to Annapolis Rocks, along the I-70/Rte 40 section. I have hiked the Md section many times, but have only seen bears a few times. They are not as bad in this area as compared to the GSMNP. But as usual, use precaution and hang your food bag a good distance away from your tent.
Bears here are like the other wildlife here, they tent to stay away from humans and not bother with you. I have had them as well come up to my tent sniffing around, but had no problems with them.
It's not how you start your hike, it's how you finish.
I Just Hiked The Maryland Section Last Weekend And Didnt Run Into Any Bears Or A Trace Of Them But Like Everyone Says Be Safe And Hang Your Food Anyways.

You never can be sure the presence of mice, skunks, raccoons or other smaller wildlife either.
