Question What are they smoking these days?

Seeing long-distance hikers smoke handrolled cigarettes is nothing new, but a couple of times this year I've smelled cigarettes being smoked at shelters that didn't really smell like tobacco.

While they may have smelled a bit sweet, they didn't smell like pot or clove cigarettes either. Are hikers mixing the end of the lid into the pouch of Bugler, or are people smoking something I'm unfamiliar with?

There are any number of things that hikers smoke that may not necessarily be tobacco.

I suspect that you may have run into hikers smoking clove or flavored cigarettes, which up until legislation restricting their sale, have become very popular with young people in recent years.

On two occasions on my last section it was definitely pot! I left the shelter, one time in the pouring rain, and set up my tent to get away from it.

My first Siberian Husky (some 25 years ago) couldn't stand the smell of pot! Sneeze and growl, sneeze and growl, sneeze and growl...this would continue until one of the smokers would ask me what was wrong with my dog..."Nothing", I would reply, "he just smells something that he doesn't like!"

It was always good for a laugh, and sometimes the smokers would even put their weed away!
Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass - it's about learning how to dance in the rain!

Could be American Spirit. Its a blend of herbs either produced by Native Americans or their recipe and alot of hikers rolled it in 2002. It doesn't smell or taste like tobacco. Comes in a pouch.

Shouldn't be smoking at the shelters...plenty of woods to do it in.

Most American Spirit tobacco smells a lot like "regular" tobacco (unless you're talking about some different kind or style they've put out). I really wish people wouldn't smoke in shelters. Go smoke in the woods if you have to.

Although I do love the smell of pipe tobacco- especially cherrywood! Near a campfire or on a cold winter day, it smells perfect.

American Spirit cigarettes are neither natural, healthy, nor are they manufactured by Native Americans. In point of fact they are owned by the same company that makes Camels, the Reynolds people, and tho they do indeed market several brands made with "organic" tobacco, the perception that the company is somehow, healthy, natural, holisitc, owned and run by and for Indians, etc., well this is all a very well constructed shuck.

I know- I'll hear a lot of "health conscious" people talking about how much better American Spirits are for you- just goes to show how much packaging and advertising can warp people's minds.

All of this is true, but I do smoke American Spirits while I'm on the trail. Here's why: although there is a certain amount of intentional confusion about American Spirits, they are made with a higher quality tobacco, are packed tighter, and do not have the accelerant chemical in them that makes other cigs continue to burn when you put them down. What this means is that I smoke fewer of them, which means I have to carry less of them.

perhaps they were smoking shisha, which is flavored tobacco that is often sweet and/ or fruity. never seen it rolled in cigs, usually smoked through a hookah.....but i guess that would be a pain to pack into the woods.

i would say that of the hundreds of ppl ive encountered on trail and in shelters, a bit over HALF dont smoke anything at all, but the remaining that do smoke, much more than half of them smoke weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

BUT DO NOT FRET! we're gonna get these devil worshippin, hip, young, dangerous, happy, hikers who smoke this deadly, addictive drug substance that was placed on this earth by SATAN himself with survallience cameras installed in shelters and along the trail. go get em GOP!
