    Default Neel's Gap to SC

Driving in from Texas during Christmas break, picking back up at Neel's Gap for next section hike to S Carolina (Deep Gap is the goal). Didn't notice if Walasi-Yi allows week-long parking, or is there safe parking on the SC side? Suggestions?

Wrong Carolina. You are planning on hiking to Deep Gap in NORTH Carolina. There is safe parking about 1/2 mi North of Neels Gap at the Byron Reese parking lot. Even safer is at Vogel state park. Hike up the Coosa trail to Slaughter Gap, take the Duncan Ridge trial to the AT just South of Blood.
The trail was here before we arrived, and it will still be here when we are gone...enjoy it now, and preserve it for others that come after us

It's safe to park at the Backcountry Information Station at Standing Indian Campground. I've never heard of anyone having problems parked at Deep Gap, either, though I don't know when that road gets gated closed. You don't say if you're self shuttling. If you're going to hire a shuttle, you might want to contact Ron Haven in Franklin, and discuss parking possibilities while you're at it.

BTW, Deep Gap is in North Carolina. Our neighbors to the south have some nice trails, but they can't claim any of the Appalachian Trail as part of it.

You can park a 1/2 mile North of Walasi-Yi at the Byron Reece parking lot.

Deep Gap(NC, by the way)will likely be closed by Christmas to car traffic but you can hike down the Kimsey Creek Trail to Standing Indian Campground and Ron Haven will pick you up.

Excellent advice from Skids, and the Kimsey Creek Trail is a great blue blaze trail.

And don't forget since we are talking about it, it is NEEL GAP. Neel didn't own the place, just engineered a road through there!!!

That'd be a long walk wouldn't it? From the SC side?

Not really. You can hike from SC to either Neels Gap or Deep Gap. Foothills to Bartram to AT (you can even add the BMT in there as well if you wanted).
    they all connect.

Okay okay okay.... .geezzz..... late night typing, hit an "S" instead of a "N". Sorry. My apologies to all the folks over in that part of the county, the folks who love the AT, the folks who are literalists, and just all the great folks here on Whiteblaze who keep us on the straight and narrow. And wow, I had no clue the Neel's versus Neel debate even existed! Learn something new every day! Yay!

As for the advice on parking, huge huge thanks to all. It's been ages since I've been on this site and yet it's very helpful.

hahaha.. my turn to be literal. My apology was for the mistyping of an "S" in front of Carolina in the original post.... that was a goof called tiredness, or bad geography from someone who's pretty sure Texas is the only place to ever live.

The "s" added to Neel was intentional because I didn't know any better or different.... that's just called blissful ignorance. hahahaha

    luv ya all
