Humor impaired is legitimately a real condition. Humor is a developed emotion just like empathy or mercy. I also say "bless your heart" if you don't think that video is funny.

I invited one of my friends hiking on the AT and he told me he wasn't going out in the woods alone with a bunch of white guys. I didn't think he was patricularly funny.

    Good point, Weary.

For me it was funny on the surface, but less so after a few moments reflection.

People use humor all the time to poke fun and make a point. So I think that Underwood and the producers did a fine job.

Its possible that those making the film only wanted to create a chuckle, but my guess is they wanted to do that and more.

    For me, they did.

    er...no.

She put up with me for three months, but that's another story. (She wanted to move back East and wanted to raise any children Catholic..hell no!)

I've said it before, I think the idea of outdoor recreation is related more to socio-economic status and education (college educated, middle class) than ethnic and racial backgrounds.

But, that's another, much more complex discussion.

Since this is a humor thread....white guilt = excellent service in college towns like Boulder!

I thought that was hilarious. Nice and dry humor showing how stupid racism is. Kinda like the humor of Archie Bunker. What was even funnier, is the truth of it all. That was really done well.

Just because it's funny doesn't mean it can't be mostly true.

BTW, I went hiking last Friday with a friend of my daughter's, who happens to be mixed race. In a state park in North Carolina, that doesn't merit a second glance.

She's keen to start backpacking. I referred her to Whiteblaze. If you see this, Tabitha, Hi!

Perhaps. But more important: Some humor seeks to generate a chuckle. Better humor seeks to stimulate thought.

Anyone who thought that this was just chuckling humor, should go back and watch the skit again.

I thought it did both. Also, the humor wasn't directed at Underwood's hiker. It rose from the other hiker's silly reactions to him. He is the normal, regular person in the sketch. As I've heard it said before, it's funny because it's true.

Interesting video, as it plays on stereotypes that white hikers have toward black hikers and stereotypes that black hikers can expect from white hikers when they encounter them hiking. The black population that is middle-class is roughly 60% of the total black population (the total population of African-Americans is about 38 million in the US), so social economic status is generally not going to limit the opportunities for hiking, there must be other cultural factors. But, I guess we Americans still like racial humor, just watch the comedy channel, every person on that station always goes to the race and ethnic jokes, maybe because they are easy to get a laugh and usually Americans seem to dance around the subject of race (and race-ethnic comedy) in our personal lives.
"I told my Ma's and Pa's I was coming to them mountains and they acted as if they was gutshot. Ma, I sez's, them mountains is the marrow of the world and by God, I was right". Del Gue
