The mountains are calling and I have to go
No help from me, unfortunately. Wish I could. But a report when you get back would be greatly appreciated!
I talked to Bilge Rat today, he is in Franklin. As of this afternoon 441 through the park is closed. Don't imagine it will open anytime soon from the looks of the forecast.
Here's a good link about weather in GSMNP http://www.nps.gov/grsm/planyourvisit/weather.htm.
There's a phone number you can call with recorded information about current weather conditions, links to the NWS for that area and general info about weather in the park year round.
We just got back from the NOC today and hiked about six miles north and then back yesterday. Conditions were horrible. Ankle deep snow once we got about 4600 feet in elevation. My suggestion is to stay home, dry and safe.
Here is the number that you can call to give you road conditions. I know they got almost a foot of snow on Mt. Leconte

as of right now there is 32 inches of snow on mt. leconte at 6,400 ft. Newfound gap has 20inches. According to the smokies website.
Yea Id avoid the Smokies for the next few weeks. Got more coming!
yea I know. I hope some of it is still there when I start a trip on the 1st. If it turns out to be too much to handle, we'll just change out plans around. Not a big deal.
As of today 12/23/09 at 3:30 PM newfound gap road is open.
Lots of snow melted. STill alot on the tops. Ridge hiking would prime time right about now. The section to do right now is Carvers to 19. Man Ill bet its beautiful in the snow!!
