I'm pretty sure it will always be uphill from RT. 9, like the description says...

I remember a couple of years ago heading down to RT 9 (from the North) in a lightning/thunder/hail storm. It was right on top of us. I was getting splashed in the face as the water streamed down that steep stone work. I also remember singing "Singing in the Rain" as I got soaked to the skin. Nothing like a good day on the trail!!

How is the area around this shelter for tenting? Is there room, and if so how much?

Room for 3-4 tents in the area in front of the shelter.

Most tenters head to the large tenting area behind and to the right (facing the shelter). It's almost split into two areas back there and should hold close to ten tents.

There is a flat cleared spot on the way up to the outhouse. This should be good for 1 or 2 tents. I tented there (7/2012) by myself and never noticed any smell, but I guess if the wind blows the wrong way...

Stayed here this past weekend, before heading to goddard. Post holed the whole way. There were alot of people turning around because of the snow, but i had just driven two hours so i had to hike.
