My son has decided he doesn't like backpacking, so I'll be going alone. Probably around the second week of Mar. Depending on Feb babies.

That is about the time I plan on starting the trail -- I hope to see you out there. Don't worry about being alone -- you never really are except sometimes during the day when you are hiking and even then you can meet up with other hikers. The community of AT people is amazing and very supportive

Gear sure is expensive, i should have done this when I was 18...... LOL

lol... well think of it this way - you wouldn't have had the money to do it when you were 18 any! I know I wouldn't have.

I don't know what part of TN you're from, are you near the trail? Either way, you can certainly get in some challenging weekend hiking, and if you can get some longer trips in before next year all the better.

Gear doesn't have to be expensive, the lighter it is, the more it costs, but you might be able to pick up some good deals on the forums here this summer as some of the spring starters have to drop.

Think about making a list of what you need and posting it here as a "Want to Buy".

I guess that makes me #30?

Just a test for today. Me and a buddy are planning a 2011 thru hike. This summer, my wife, me & my buddy are hiking the Long Trail in VT to see if we're up to the task. If all goes as we're thinking, should start our AT thru hike in late March / early April!!!!!! CANNOT WAIT!!!!!!

I'll be starting in late March I hope. Still need to get that letter accepting my deferral request from college. I'll be 18 when I start and I think I'll have a buddy with me. Less than 1 year to wait! Now I just need to think of something to do between now and then
