    anybody need a new AT term?
    it is 'estimated stench distance'
    of course the longer you are on the trail (without a shower of course) the shorter the ESD becomes.......

    Isn't that opposite? I've detected SOBO's in fog 1/4 to 1/2 miles away. The longer they are on trail and unshowered, the further the stench announced their impending arrival.

    I think this can apply to non-hiking tourists too. I was walking down into a gap once and smelled the tourists soapy clean smells with perfume and such way before I ever saw them. They stink purdy

    i'm with u...after a week or so on the trail....i've attained that "ripe hiker smell".....soooooooo.....the day-hikers smell "kinda funny!"
