I was wondering what methods people used to hang their food bags.

10 feet high 6 feet out. Hang it and tie it off. Not too tough

I sewed a section of cord to the bottom of the stuff bag for my sleeping bag. I would put all my food into this at night, tighten the drawstrings and then suspend upside down via another piece of cord either from a shelter rafter or a rope over a tree. Bag is waterproof and everything is in ziplocks. No problems with mice---ever (and I have over 5000 miles of AT hiking). Just make sure to keep away from the shelter side walls and good idea to make sure you utilize an old lid or can to keep the mice from shimmying down the cord. Little bastards! Also, make sure you leave every zipper in your pack unzipped, because if you forget something in your pack (even if you don't) you will end up with a hole by mornings light. Best to have them crawling freely then to chew a hole in your home.

In case you wanted more detail, this is what I do:

Little cheap stuff sack about 2" x 3" with 50 ft of paracord tied to the stuff sack cord and the curled up inside. Take the paracord out of the little stuff sack, find a small rock to put into the stuff sack to weight it, throw it over a branch, remove rock from stuff sack, tie on food bag, haul up 10 ft, then tie off.

Curiously, finding the right size rock is usually the toughest part of the whole deal.

May I be the first to say that I hang my food in the tent with me.

I like the PCT method. No taunt line for a bear to snag loose and get your food.

Me too. That's why I love my tent. I just sleep w/ my pack next to me. Is this considered dangerous on the AT? Also, I didn't treat any water on my first AT hike. But, I plan to treat some on this next one. My luck's gotta run out sometime.

Some swear by food in the tent. Some have had their tent ripped by bears or other animals. Its a personal decision. If it were me, I want a safe and sound sleep, so I hang without the worry of something circling my tent.

I've adopted this method too. Very easy, and makes sense.

Take almost nothing I say seriously--if it seems to make no sense what so ever it's probably meant as a joke....but do treat your water!
