Default Favorite three day stretch on the AT

Well it is FCAT (our state standardized test) time in Florida. I'm sitting in my high school classroom on the third and final day of our testing cycle. Lots of wasted time when students are not testing, especially since our county has no attendance policy and students not testing each day are allowed to stay home. Started wondering... if I had the chance to spend three days on the AT, what would be a great three-day stretch. Any favorites along with the reasons why?

I haven't done it yet, but, from visiting up there and partial day hiking portions of this area, I vote Carvers Gap to Dennis Cove.

If you want to be reasonably close to home, the Standing Indian loop makes a nice three-day, two-night hike. It's near Franklin, NC.

    In no particular order:

    1. NH - Franconia Notch to Crawford Notch (late July through August)
    2. NH - Crawford Notch to Pinkham (late July through August)
    3. ME - Rangely/Rt. 4 to Stratton over Saddleback (late July through August)
    4. ME - Stratton to Caratunk over Bigalows (late July through August)
    5. VT - Rt 9 to Rt. 30 (July through mid-October)
    6. NC/TN - Devil Fork Gap/Rt. 212 to Erwin (May or October)
    7. TN - Erwin to Hughes Gap (May, Septmeber, October)
    8. NC/TN - Smokies SW - Fontana to Newfound (May, June, October)
    9. NC/TN - Smokies NE - Newfound to Davenport (May, June, October)
    10. VA - Damascus to Fox Creek (May, June, October)
And there's lot of other possibilities.

Yeah, well, I'm 53 and STILL in 6th grade science. Some students never learn! We gotta get back to social promotion instead of promotion based on test scores!

Good to see other Florida teachers on here. I had to proctor on Tuesday and Wednesday, but today I hardly see any kids. I'm finishing up grading some papers, listening to my iPod, and planning my summer hike.

Some of the areas mentioned are really tough hiking. Like in NH and parts of ME, though they are beautiful. So it depends on how much you want to do. And how much experience you have hiking, etc.

I think a nice stretch that someone mentioned (and is closer to you) is Newfound Gap to Hot Springs. The best of the Smokies plus Max Patch. But that's more than 3 days.
Or do Damascus north for a few days.

I'll second that and crumbsnatcher's "roan mtn. to US19E (probably my favorite section)." Although the later only requires two days, I suppose you could stretch it to three with plenty of time to "play" on the awesome balds!

I'm the highest paid FCAT proctor in Alachua County.
I'm not really a hiker, I just play one on White Blaze.

I-40 to Hot Springs. High elevation grass balds, beautiful campsites, wild, cascading creeks and you finish in a great trail town.

The state of MD. Leisurely 3 day walk and you can visit the AT conference center while in Harpers Ferry.
Conquering the AT one weekend at a time!
