    Default GORP Mixes

Just curious, what do you people put in your GORP???

i was just curious because i lead a boy scout troop and i've gotten some of the most creative and tasty mixes from them.

i.e. this one kid had chocolate m&m's, peanuts, cashews, sunflower seeds, banana nut odwalla bar chunks, cheetos and almonds.

sometimes i like to keep it simple and i do chocolate m&m's with some cheddar cheese goldfish and cashews and peanuts.

    anyone else do anything special???

Favorite so far: Honey Bunches of Oats "Just Bunches", golden raisins, and peanuts.

is there any reason for the raisins in the gorp, i dont like them much, but is there like an energy boost or a particular nutritional value that they add?

They're a calorie (sugar) boost. You could just as easily put something else kinda sweet in there.

They also have vitamins & antioxidants. If you don't like raisins, maybe you could try some other dried fruit - blueberries, mango, pineapple, cherries, bananas, etc.

Favorite unusual addition to gorp mix - candied ginger.

    True; good point.

Dried pineapple does sound good too.

Dried cantaloupe is awesome if you can find it (or dehydrate it yourself).

I gather raisins, dried blueberries, cherries and cranberries. Candy doesn't do much for me on the trail.

I met a hiker that had skittles in his mix. He didn't like it.

Im allergic to nuts (not peanuts) so my favorite is this mix I found from Target, called Monster trail mix- peanuts, M&m, raisins, chocolate chips and beanut butter ships- DEELICIOUS!
I wish I could eat more nuts..but then I would wish I were still alive.

Know what "GORP" means? It's an old acronym for "good old raisins and peanuts". So technically, in order for something to be called "gorp", it must have raisins.

I have three standards, and one isn't even really gorp:

    1. raisins, peanuts, plain m&m's
    2. dried pineapple and toasted almonds
    3. pretzels, cheese thins and rye rounds

Gogi berries if you can afford them, also cranberries and the dried ginger thing is awesome. Soynuts and karub, also wonderful if you have some extra cash and a discerning palate. Strange but awesome with chocolate: bacon bits. Sprinkle them in your gorp for a special little treat.

Target has some really good trail mix as mentioned. They don't always have my favorite, pumpkin spice, but I load up when they do. It's wicked good!

Wally World has a couple of different trail mix flavors in large bags. I am not brave enough to try the Cajun mix yet.
