Default SoBo Hike starting end of August 2010

I want to do a southbound hike starting around the end of August, probably around the 28th to the 31st area.

That's weird. We're from the same town, we're planning on leaving at the same time. I'm hiking with someone named Joe & is exactly your age. : ] I wonder if we know each other?

You're gonna be in full winter weather later in the hike with cold and likely snowy south (esp Smokies, balds etc). Just be ready for it.

    Default Fall start SOBO

I had a chance once to talk to Dan Bruce about how late a thru-hiker could start at Katahdin and have a decent chance of getting past the Whites. His opinion was no later than Labor Day because it will take a lot of thru-hikers a month to get on the other side of the Whites. It's the weather in the Whites that can cause the problems.
