Poll: How do you overtake hikers?

    Default Overtaking hikers

When you are trailrunning, and come up behind a walker/hiker/backpacker, do you:

    A) Pass them if is safe to do so (or wait to pass them until it is safe to do so), or
    C) Expect them to get off of the trail so you can pass and if they don't you become rude and insult them?

    Just wondering.

Addendum: assume the hiker you desire to overtake is walking as far over to the side of the trail as he/she reasonably can.

I don't pass anyone but mtn. bikers yell "on your left or right" when passing in my local hills and that seems to work.

I've never found the trail that busy to worry too much about it. Be polite and things take care of themselves.
Fear ridges that are depicted as flat lines on a profile map.

Oh, I totally voted for being pissy. Because it's 100% the funnier answer.
    Don't take anything I say seriously... I certainly don't.

    Common sense..works for me.

When I want to pass someone on the uphill (be it hiking, running or skiing), I usually say a cherry 'Good morning' behind them to let them know I want to pass. Most get the point and move off to the side. IF they don't, I usually ask politely "Mind if I play through?" with a smile on my face.

Naturally, someone going uphill has the right of way if I am doing downhill.

Common sense and courtesy is what ultimately works.

I use a skiing technique and say: "on your left" or "on your right" please!
Why should anyone get "pissy" about something like this?

its a lengthy journey on the way up to the top

A tin can is a tin can, but a Manwich is a meal. My point is that I'm having a hard time figuring out dumber poll question to ask than yours.

Why do you suppose I asked it? Does it make you feel better about yourself to pass such a declaration?

From the results of this poll, and my own experience, it seems common sense and courtesy are only prevalent in 90% of trailrunners (but I am hopefull it could be as high as 95%).

I always find it best to saying "excuse me". It is a nice way of passing someone without anyone having a reason to get piss off.

I trip them from behind with my poles, then tease them as they're laying on the ground. Or, I'm polite. Just depends on the mood.
