Just a quick fyi..... clingmans dome road opening has been pushed back until June 18th. if you planned on hitting the forneys from the top of the mountain ya'll have to start at Newfound Gap, could make for a long day.

Does this affect getting to the start of the MTS trail?

The road to Clingman's is closed for repairs. Since the MST starts at Clingmans, the answer would be "yes" while the road is closed... The NPS keeps info on road closures in GSMNP pretty well up-to-date on their website. Cades opened up about a month ahead of schedule after similar repairs.
