Hikers start at Harper's Ferry and go to Penn Mar in one day. Usually begin in the early AM and walk all day and into the late evening. So technically they have begun in West VA, hiked MD, and end inside PA

I just did this on a Saturday in April. A friend and I parked just inside Pennsylvania, right where the trail crosses PenMar Rd., and camped overnight. At the AT road crossing there is a small lot that will hold about 3-4 cars. You have to walk a little ways North into Pennsylvania on the AT to find a good spot to camp.

We got up early, and started hiking at 4 AM. We didn't set any speed records or anything, but just maintained a consistent pace throughout the day. It took us almost 16 hours to cross Maryland and reach Harper's Ferry, WV, 42 miles to the South. Others have done it much faster, but this was comfortable for us.

We stayed at the Comfort Inn in Harper's Ferry (about a mile up the hill). It's a nice place.

The next day, we had a shuttle drive us back to our car at PenMar. I was unsure about whether to leave the car at the beginning or at the end of he hike. There are advantages and disadvantages to both. We left the car at the beginning because then we were able to leave our camping gear in the car.

It was a great hike, and we met many friendly people along the way. I would recommend it to anyone who wants a hiking challenge. After all, it's just walkin'.

The year my wife and I sectioned through there, there was an organized run going on. The idea was to run across Maryland on the AT as fast as you could. It included food and drink suppot at the road crossings.
