A.T. Logo

Is the A.T. logo trade marked? I wanted to make some shirts and use the that A with the T as the A's cross section. Just wondering. I make really cool shirts, been doing it a while. My buddy owns the print shop to do it with and we are both somewhat artist. Just wondering.

If you want to be on the safe side, ask the ATC what their policy is on use of the logo. They might even want to offer the shirts for sale through their store.

ATC has two trademarked logos that have, as an element, the "A" with the dropdown "T."

One is the current ATC logo with the circle and the sun. The other is the diamond logo with "Maine to Georgia" on it (the old metal blaze markers).

The "AT" itself doesn't seem to be trademarked, although for the diamond logo it does say:


NO REGISTRATION RIGHTS ARE CLAIMED FOR THE PHRASE "MAINE TO GEORGIA" APART FROM THE MARK AS SHOWN; HOWEVER, APPLICANT WAIVES NONE OF ITS COMMON LAW RIGHTS IN THE MARK AS SHOWN OR ANY FEATURE THEREOF. .

I don't know much about trademark law -- if you're serious about selling them you may want to consult an attorney rather than the ATC. I will say that if they do own it, they don't seem to have made serious efforts at protecting the trademark.

For example, the GI Joe Adventure Team logo is pretty much the same. Originally produced before the AT diamond logo was trademarked (1970-1976), a newer version was released in 2007 with the same logo:

I didn't hear about ATC making a fuss about that, and that would've caught their eye, I would think, way before noticing you running off a small run of shirts.

You might also consider donating a part of the proceeds to the ATC. I think that would help with sales and give you something to be proud of.

The price will really depend on the quality of shirt. I myself will be going for the highest quality shirt I can find. I'm not sure how synthetics react to our machine but I dont suppose it would be a problem. I'm going to look in too the blended synthetics too.

I'm not 100% sure, but I believe this logo was created by the NPS - which would make it in the public domain since it was created by the government.
