I plan on using a coke can stove on my thru-hike nest year, and I am currently fishing around for easy to follow instructions on how to make one, if you know of any links or have some of your own it would help me a bunch.

Many posts here, should be no problem.

As with any new stove, practice several times at home before hitting the trail. Also, don't give up if the stove you make seems to not work the first time or dosn't work "good enough". Try a few more times before giving up.

Possible problems/solutions:

Will not light at all: FIRST; make sure the stove is'nt lit, alcohol flame is invisable. Too small / large holes/vents, too much fuel, not enough fuel, fuel too cold. If holes too small, make more or enlarge them. If too large, make a different stove & use smaller holes or fewer ones. Too much fuel, reduce amount. If too little fuel, add some. If too cold: warm stove in your hands. DO ALL OF THIS AFTER MAKING SURE THE STOVE IS NOT LIT.

Too small flame: possibly wrong hole size, too little or cold fuel, see above. Or, no wind screen.

Too large flame: possibly wrong hole size, too much fuel, pre heated too much, etc.

I can't get the d*** thing to work at all: Re read the instructions, see above fixes, try a different style AFTER trying a few more times.


I will never go back to the gasoline stove, I LOVE my alcohol stove.

uconnmike....i bought one from the tin man on ebay for 6 bucks...looks like he has quiet a few of them....weighs less than an ounce.

You can make your own coke can stoves, but TinMan has the jigs and routine developed for a very reliable and efficient stove. He demonstrated these to us at the SORUCK back in January. I recommend them.

I have Tim Man's alcohol stove, non-stick pot with cozy, and wind screen, ... and swear by them.

They're cheap, light, work great. Tin Man has really balanced price, weight, and quality wonderfully well, and gives great service to boot. IMHO.

If you aren't a building kind of guy, the $12.00 isn't too bad. The first one will be hard to do, but the rest will be a piece of cake.

Those are all great suggestions. And they all work! That's the beauty of alcohol stoves, they will all work!

There's a another very simple design that I like, but I'm prejudiced. It is easy to make, lightweight, and efficient. No priming, just light and start cooking. All that's really required to make it is a knife, a pair of scissors, and two little cans. Step-by-step construction details for the deluxe version are shown in my gallery. There are shortcuts - the holes can be punched with a knife, the tape isn't necessary. It takes me less than 5 minutes to knock one out, assuming both cans are empty and clean.

OK, i built my stove, i posted some pics of it yesterday, but Lobo tols me that that orange flame is bad, and while i have blue on the bottom the orange flame means not enough oxygen is getting to the flame, how can i fix this so it isnt orange anymore, oh and as a side note i used rubbing alchohol casue i dint get the good denatured stuff yet, could that be why? Im just nervous now that my stove sucks and isnt as great as a thought, please help

Relax. It's the fuel. Get either denatured alcohol from a hardware store or HEET fuel additive from just about anywhere.
