What are the chances that Jerry Cabin Shelter will be full come (this)Saturday evening? 3 old college buddies, one 2-person tent, and 1 hammock = hope the chances are good that there is room in the shelter, LOL

Just be cautious on the Bald Mountain ridgeline this time of year. Its a lightning prone area. Water can be scarce in between Allen Gap and Flint Mtn Shelter. So water up every chance. And watch the mosquitos and flys at Jerrys.

As for room, there are several flat areas back near Camp Creek Bald/Jones Meadows, the fields on Coldspring, Shelton Graves, and Flint Mtn Shelter.

Yep, great campsites in that area. The shelter was a sty last time I was there. I'd camp.

I was hiking north of there this past weekend (Erwin to Sam's Gap) and saw zero other backpackers on the trail. Of course the rain might have had something to do with that.

Ditto what Sgt. Rock said: The shelter is quite unlovely. If you can beg, borrow, or steal any sort of tent or tarp you'd probably be happier.

just north of the shelter is great camping. You will be fine this weekend. Kids are back in school and tourons are gone.

I'm not anti-shelter by any means, but that one's pretty nasty.

If you go south another 6.8 miles Little Laurel Shelter is OK.

We went up there with the same idea, except that the stuff in that field is about 4-5 feet tall and prickly

Good point. I usually sleep in the trees, so I didn't think about that. As I recall the area around the Shelton graves would have made a good hammock site.

Yea if you get that far, its less overgrown and has fire rings and got spots. That field in spring is awesome
