    Default 2011 gear list

    Hey everyone!

As I'm reading past threads from 2010 it seems that gear was discussed in really random and irrelevant places.

My intent for this thread is for everyone to just list all the stuff they intend to carry and possibly everything's weight (or a total weight). This would make spotting trends very easy and see quickly see what everyone is doing.

I'm hoping detailed discussions can be started in their own threads. For example "2011 sleeping bag discussion" or "2011 clothing". This will make finding information on this site easier to find.

Thanks and see you on the Trail!

    Core weight: 6lb 3 oz

    Misc.

    camera
    ear plugs
    sea to summit 13L dryback
    trash compactor bag
    6x8 waterproof paper notebook
    25 ft nylon cord
    (not taking trek poles)

    Clothing
shoes: merrell chameleon 3 Ventilator Gore Tex, 2lb 8 oz (for the pair)

Might as well. Dunno if I'll get to do a whole thru or just a half, but either way:

Pack: Outdoor Products Skyline, 1 lb. 4 oz. (slightly modified) 20
Bag: Campmor 20 Down mummy, 2 lb 4 oz. 36
Shelter: Cheap no-name poncho tarp, 14 oz. (may add bivy, as I'm a wierdo who likes 'em)
Pad: Modified blue foamy (folds as pack suspension), 10 oz.
Groundcloth: Space blanket if I need it.

    Baseweight 5 lbs.

Miscellania (not gonna try to guess weights for these lol):
    Headnet
    Ghetto tincan woodstove/beercan pot
    2L pop bottle with carrier
    Largeish thermos-type mug
    Tea-steeper for my looseleaf mate
    Aquamira
    Dr. Bronners
    Little folding knife as tool
    Food knife
    Some kinda spork
    Lighter/starters
    Compact camera
    Cheap headlamp
    Toothbrush
    Krazy glue
    Vaseline
    Neosporin
    A few trashbags and ziplocks
    Plenty of cord
    Maybe a paperback?
    Extra batteries

    Clothes:
    Shoes: Inov8 X-talon 240s, 24 oz. total
Pants: my old zipoffs. never failed me yet ~10 oz.
Shorts: cheap running shorts ~4 oz.
Shirt: old nike dri-fit shirt ~2 oz.
Baselayer: wal-mart athletic tops and bottoms
Insulation: montbell jacket if I can afford it
    Rainshell: Poncho+trashbag rainskirt
Socks: Smartwools (love 'em). May get some sealskinz for running/hiking this winter and would probably bring them too.
Hat: my NF fleece cap. May add a balclava

I'd estimate my dry weight somewhere close to yours, with food and water probably adding no more than 10 lbs. at any given point.

In addition to food and water, i will also carry about 8oz of denatured alcohol for my stove. My strategy is to go as light as possible with my gear so i can carry more of what i refer to as 'stupid stuff.' This includes, but is not limited to, books, mp3 player, carving knife, rubik's cube (yes, i've hiked almost 1000 miles with one and my record time is 1min 20sec), ukulele, throwing knife, roll of hemp for jewelry making, etc. I'm on the fence as to whether or not i should bring my travel guitar... Also, i've been known to carry a favorite dvd to watch at hostels. I'm definately not the typical hiker, but show me the hiker you consider 'normal' and i'll show you a guy who's not having any fun.

    Default Old school list

Well, it's only 2150 miles. A pair of Nike's, a hoody, a bottle of Aquafina water, and pocket umbrella ought to do it, right? Heck, I'll be sleeping in shelters, and you guys will be there with all your stuff, right?

So what's that come to -- 3 pounds? I win!

    Just kidding.

I guess I'm the ultralighter's best friend. My empty weight's 29.5 lbs. Full list attached.

Of course, that's assuming I don't change my mind and bring a laz-y-boy, too. Rei's got a new one with legs and everything for only 18 oz. Tempting!

My preliminary gear puts me at 32 lbs w/o food, fuel, and water. I'm nowhere near an ultralight backpacker, but I am a larger guy (6'5'' 260lbs) and I'm used to carrying a heavy pack (like over 60 lbs). I'm just happy that I've been able to cut my base weight to under 35lbs.

    Basics:
    REI Ridgeline 65
North Face Cat's Meow in compression sack
    Therm-a-Rest Ridge Rest Large
    REI Cirque 2 ASL Tent
Leki Thermolite XL Aergon Trekking Poles
    MSR Miniworks EX Water Filter
    MSR Wisperlite Internationale Stove

I know I could easily cut out several pounds, get a lighter tent, a lightweight stove, etc...but I like my conveniences. If this does get too heavy after the first 100 miles or so, I'll ship it home and get something featherweight.

I'm still in the planing stages, but I am definitely going next year.

Don't forget your charge cards for Winton at Mountain Crossings.

Seriously, all that does sound a bit heavy without food / water. Ya might want to think about shedding at least a few pounds between now and then. Usually there's some heavy outdated stuff, redundant stuff, overkill stuff, etc. in there that just doesn't / won't get used and doesn't really add to the comfort of the hike or camp.

I think it's easier to list what will change. Since I got off the trail I'd like to switch to a Kookabay air pad. Actually, two, depending on the temperature. Railrider mesh pants. No Peek Pronto. Probably no solar charger, in which case I'll switch to lithiums. Add a Fujifilm F300EXR camera. Smaller bottles for my soap and alcohol. Still looking for a better way to floss on the trail.

I was hoping to have someone buy everything for me and carry it. I don't want to carry things. I have to carry my own stuff?

Actually I was hiking south of Bear's Den this past June and passed a young woman without any gear and 3 young men with packs. They were heading north. I didn't ask any questions just kept going through the roller coaster.

I don't feel like typing that much to list all my stuff, but my weight is at 17-18 lbs. I got new lightweight gear for the trip this time.

Here is my gear list so far. The numbers in red at the end of each section is total weight (so far) of that section. They are rough (based on manufacturer weight/weights I've seen on other lists), and I have not weighed/found weights for the items that do not have numbers next to them yet. This puts me right under 16 lbs with what I have so far (rough) but includes all clothing, etc. Hope its not too confusing/helps some. Also, if anyone has weights for items not listed, that would help me more with a rough estimate. Also, I currently own all of this gear except the sleeping bag (have a Northface Cat's Meow right now), and have been backpacking with it. I am figuring on right around 18 lbs or so on my back before food/water after I take out what I will be wearing/add the items not yet included. Comments/criticism are encouraged.

Also, attached is my spreadsheet that I am using. It is based off of Winton Porter's recommended list, modified for my needs. All of the spreadsheets I found online were way too complicated for what I wanted.
