Am doin a long weekend in Shenandoah from elkwallow to front royal. Any concerns or issues. I hear water maybe hard to come by.

Decent rain overnight. Hopefully that'll get the springs running for you.

Thanks folks...yes its been dry in Ohio here...no good serious long down pours to really saturate the ground. Hopefully the it rains alot over the next few weeks to squeeze every last drop outta the skys

I did Thornton Gap to Front Royal on an overnight at the end of August and there were *a lot* of dry springs. Elkwallow was probably the last reliable one before I hit Gravel Springs. After GS there was not a lot until I got back to FR - prob @ 11 miles.

Getting 1-3" of rain starting last night and going through the next couple of days.

I would pass on the tap water @ the Elkwallow wayside & get water from the delicious spring @ Range View Cabin. You will also be able to get water at Gravel Springs Hut(very tasty & flowing good) & just south of Compton Peak(not bad & right on the AT).

I'm not sure about the source @ Tom Floyd. It was dry when I was there on 9/22, but it's rained quite a bit since then.

I used the outdoor tap at Elkwallow and it was OK.

One thing to keep in mind about the GSH spring (if youre not staying there) - its straight downhill to get there and straight uphill getting back

Also there are a family of bears living in the clearing by the GSH spring that we saw on the trail to the hut as well as in the clearing. If you look in my gallery you can see the bears walking near the yellow marker (the spring is right there):
