    Question European sleeping bag brands...

I've been toying with the idea of replacing my ArcticShield 0 degree synthetic bag(3 lbs). After looking through all the usual US manufacturers,(Marmot, Western Mountaineering, Big Agnes, etc) I thought about manufacturers in Europe. After looking through some of them, I ran into Hispar sleeping bags, manufactured by Peter Hutchinson Designs. Some of these bags seem unbelievable. Like a -46°C (-51°F) bag weighing only 3lbs 4oz? Check them out here. Any thoughts?

I don't believe it, even if it is at the extremes of tight fit and flimsy materials. Any reviews out there?

It should be illegal lying about sleeping bag temp ratings.

Actually I think Europe has a standardized system for rating sleeping bags.

Check out the Terra-Nova (UK) bags. They use 900 down in several of them . They are the makers of the Laser Tents too.

How about mention in industry literature?

"[Peter Hutchinson] is one of very few designers to who climbers have consistently paid tribute for over 40 years. Mike Parsons & Mary B. Rose in 'Invisible on Everest: Innovation and the Gear Makers'"

They've been in business for several decades. You don't do that by lying.

They put out products that match those superlatives by using the most advanced materials and insulation (900 fill down!?) and they price accordingly. If they were priced to compete with, say, the North Face's bags I would share your skepticism, but these guys are legit. Check out their "about us" section for more.

WM and Feathered Friends are true US manufacturers, and I can't imagine needing a better bag than what they build.
