So if the driving time was about the same, where would you go?
Answer depends on time of year:
Spring - the South
July - nowhere - wait 'till August
August-Mid September - White Mountains & Maine
Fall - the South or VT-MA
I'll add:
Winter - the South.

The south. I feel like the trail's better. But the whites have gorgeous views.. Bugs suck at that time though... So, the south.

I was thinking that also.....Does anyone have any recommendations for canoeing trips around the smokies/damascus/somewhere along the southern part of the Trail's corridor?

You can canoe the Shenandoah River in northern Virginia. Beautiful spot. Further south, you're better off rafting or kayaking the great whitewater rivers. The trail crosses the Nantahala River at a rafting outfitter, where you can spend the night, resupply, and hit the river.
The New River runs a little East of the AT. It starts in North Carolina and flows North into Virginia. It's great for an extended canoeing trip that involves camping along the way. There are dedicated riverside state park campgrounds. It's a good sized river and fairly tame. We take a fifty mile trip there about every other year starting down in NC and ending up near Independence, VA, which is about an hour East of Damascus, though the river goes much closer to the trail near Mouth Of Wilson.

Maine (in fall, preferably). I haven't hiked much between the Delaware Water Gap and the Ga/NC border, though I enjoyed a couple of short hikes in the Shennies back in the 1970s.
Maine has fewer people on the trail (except, ironically, in the Hundred Mile "Wilderness") than most of the other northern states I've hiked, and the scenery is wild and green, with plenty of swimming spots and big mountains. Everything you could want in a "wild" eastern US experience.

If you're as far north as Shenandoah and want to canoe the river, I recommend Downriver Canoe Company. I used them last summer for a day paddle. Class act - been in business for about 40 years.
Summer- Start at VT / MA state line and head north. By the time you get to the Whites you'll have some trail legs under you.
hard to find a nice relaxing canoe trip near the smoky mountains (I've tried); as the others have said, the Shenandoah is great!
The New River has several possibilities for up to 3-4 day trips from Jefferson, NC into Virginia. I have done a 3 day trip and it is really nice. See the following web sites

The New River in NC is a very relaxing paddle. There are 3 campgrounds in the state park, about a easy days paddle apart. The last one only accessible by canoe.
Back in 1980 I did a canoe trip on the Toe river in NC. It wasn't too difficult, Class II only, and was nice.
