A neck knife from ColdSteel is only 2.7 oz and is ideal for defense. Not a bear slayer for sure but it's better than bare hands vs. paws.

Funny I thought about the hobbit too, only he has boots.
Dogs are excellent judges of character, this fact goes a long way toward explaining why some people don't like being around them.

Patrick from Indiana carried a knife that may have qualified. It weighed nearly two pounds including the leather sheath. It was over a foot long and reminded me of the knife from Crocadile Dundie "Now that's a knife." Winton convinced him to mail it home at Neels Gap. Great kid BTW. I heard he did make it to K without the knife/sword.
I heard of a couple of hobos on the trail, who were carrying a machete. To their credit, they got double duty out of by holding it over the fire, and using it as a frying pan.
I know I am about 5 years too late for the better part of this but.....
Why carry a sword or a lightsaber when you can carry....

This is what I carry, might classify as short sword. Works well on all things.
I recall meeting "Roni from Israel" on the Florida Trail and he was carrying a machete! I have a photo somewhere.........
you could amass a stuffed squirrel army like the janitor from Scrubs
I broke a mirror in my house. I'm supposed to get seven years bad luck but my lawyer thinks he can get me five.
