Exclamation Backpacker Magazine out of print?

Maybe this is old news at this point, though they didn't exactly advertise it, but Backpacker (as well as a bunch of other Outside-owned mags) are ending print production this year: https://thetrek.co/outside-ends-mont...7o2hhsh-gtqIoI

Backpacker was the first magazine I subscribed to as a kid hiking in the Daks and I've been a regular writer for them since college, so this wasn't easy to see. But with the amount the magazine has changed in that time, not exactly surprising either.

Anyway, because there's not really something else in print that's truly for backpackers, I decided to use my experience in the industry to try to fill that gap...in a different way, though: We needed something independent (now that we know what happens when VC and monopolies get a hold of these publications), coffee-table quality and collectible, printed on real paper, with a greater focus on design and photography, and way fewer ads, but with all the same kinds of great content. Give Trails Magazine a look: https://trailsmag.net

I thought the folks here would be interested in seeing that!

I use to collect those magazines and plan out trips that they published.

I got the letter. I've been subscribed to BKPKR since it was Wilderness Camping. I'm bumbed....mostly 'cause Outdoor Magazine is terrible. Ironically I received the last issue last week and it is excellent. I'll miss it, but the new parent company will miss my subscription money.

For the many years I got it, it was mostly "hiker porn" for destinations. At one point they sponsored a TV show that was one big ad, the This Old House of backpacking. I got sick of shaking all the blowin subscription cards and long ago let my subscription lapse. The gear reviews were handy, but it was obvious that they wouldnt say a bad thing about a large advertiser.

I've been reading it since the "Wilderness Camping" days and have subscribed personally for almost 10 years now. Never received a letter stating there'd be no more paper edition. I actually read it in my last issue. Going forward, I'm done. Not interested in having to be on a computer more than I already am. I'm sure they won't even notice my absence but I do think they're sacrificing more readers than they realize.

That's all for now. Take care and until next time...be well.

I still have the first (about) 40 issues
.....Someday, like many others who joined WB in the early years, I may dry up and dissapear....
