    Default Gravity Filters

Thinking of dumping the pump and switching to a gravity filter. Anyone have any experience with these and can recommend a good one? Anyone want to buy a katadyn hiker pro?

I have the katadyn base camp gravity filter uses the same filter as hiker pro does real well , If you can DIY they are easy to make as well. Now saying all that someday I want to get a sawyer gravity filter since you can easily back flush on the trail and is good for over 1 million gallons.

I put together a gravity setup like the one in this video.
Mine weighs a little under 8 ounces total.

Was thinking of getting the Sawyer. Looks very versatile.

I used the Platypus Clean Stream Gravity Filter last year. We started with 3 in our group and it was very convenient for large quantities of water. Did 1200 miles last year and am still using the original filter. I would backflush about a quarter liter every time I used it and then did a full backflush with some chlorine water every couple of weeks. Overall, it's great for multiple people, but overkill for a single person.

    Default Sawyer/Platy setup

I have put together the Sawyer .01 micron absolute inline with nipples on either end and use it in conjunction with a Platy Big Zip 2.0L for the dirty and 2.0L Platy bottle for the clean. The flow is wonderful, works awesome! Backflushing is easy. I even have adapted a sunshower-type shower head with it's own hose and quick-disconnect to use with the dirty Platy. At around $110 for all and around 13oz. (11oz.without shower setup) a great deal. Easy to use with great flexability and I can get clean on the trail. Of course using LNT principals.

It will probably be the last filter that I ever have to buy! The filter will undoubtedly outlast the Platys and maybe me.

    Love it!....Hope that this helps.

Excellent chioce.... good luck! PM me with the setup that you purchased or DIY configure and how it works for you. Last filter you will ever have to buy....Pass it down through the generations!

I picked up a Sawyer today and will be making a gravity filter as well.
Thanks for the links to other threads.

I think this one pictured in this thread looks like a winner at 6oz.

    I also like this type:

I've got plenty of sil left from making hammock tarps. I think I'll make a tall, thin bag so that the unfiltered water builds more head pressure over the filter.

BTW, my Walmart had Sawyer SP140 water bottle kits with filters suitable for making a gravity filter on clearance for $30.
I bought the 2 in my store.
    Good hunting
