    Default Literal Pack Weight

What is too heavy when it comes to packs? I have a REI UL 60 but am going to need a bigger pack for an upcoming section hike. But bigger also means heavier. My UL 60 is like 3.1 lbs and some of the ones I have been looking at are around 5 or 6 lbs. That just sounds insane!

Se - lay out all the things that you are taking, use a compression bag on your sleeping bag. See what you can reduce or remove. A five pound pack is in IMO a winter pack. Take one large item like your coat and roll it tight and strap to the outside.

bigger pack doesn't necessarily mean heavier. For example.

    Osprey Atmos 65 3lbs 11 oz 4200 cu. in.
6 Moon Designs Starlite 1lb 9 oz 4200 cu. in.

I happen to own both of these packs, and enjoy using both.

    Just a thought.

Gotta agree, bigger doesn't always mean heavier. The ULA Catalyst is 4600 cubes and comes in at 2.9 lbs for a medium with a medium hipbelt. The ULA Circuit is 4200 cubes and 2.2 lbs. Lots of packs that have more volume, but aren't necessarily heavier than their smaller counterparts.

Five or six pounds for a pack is pretty excessive, you're right. A general guideline is to try and get your Big Three (pack, shelter and sleeping bag) under 10lbs., which means in the neighborhood of three pounds apiece. You can easily do this with "off the rack" gear if you're good about reading the labels; an Atmos 65, a Hubba and a Campmor +20 Down bag come in just under 9. Upgrading to specialty ultralight gear like a tarptent, a ULA or Golite pack, or a WM ultralight bag will cut further weight.

Thanks for the advice guys! I'm looking at my list and it just seems like a lot to fit in my REI pack. Maybe I best hire a sherpa!
My pack, sleeping bag, tent and sleeping pad will weigh a lot less then 10 lbs!

ULA is having a real good sale right now on 2010 packs. Give them a call. I believe both the circuit and the catalyst are part of the deal.
