After you work out what to do with your dog when you go thru GSMNP, Damascus ought to be a good finish spot for you. Abingdon is a larger town not far away, and budget car rental sometimes has deals on one way rentals. Call ahead and see.

That would be really tough to do if the OP only has a month.

he could knock 70 miles or so off if he bypasses GSMNP though.
If you find yourself in a fair fight; your tactics suck.

The "easiest" and "cheapest" alternative would be to drive to AFSP, leave car in the long term parking lot, hike 2 weeks, turn around and hike back. No shuttle around the GSMNP needed, no worries about making it to a certain predetermined spot, and cheaper than a one way car rental.

Of course if you don't like out and backs then this isn't for you.

If Damascus is the ultimate goal then this is an excellent suggestion.

If you can make it to Erwin or Hampton you should be able to get a shuttle to Tri-Cities Airport, lots of rentals there.
