iPhone Apps for Thru Hike

Hi all,

I just got an iPhone, which I am planning to use for blogging, picture-taking, phone/texting and occasional Internet while thru hiking. I am overwhelmed by the world of apps and probably won't dive into it, but just curious if anyone loves certain apps, especially those that may be helpful on a thru hike. For example the weather channel app that gives you the forecast for wherever you are located ...

Any advice would be appreciated!

the accuterra app is really cool - you'll never be lost as long as you have power (just download the southern AT section before you leave!). you have to pay for the app, but seems to me to be worth it from everything I've read of the options for a hiking GPS app. worth getting a flashlight app too, but don't use it except for emergency as it drains battery pretty quick.
skype if you want to use that calling family etc.
in towns you may like siri and aroundme to find any kind of restaurant or other facilities.
finally if you want to know what stars are in the sky at night, get star walk.

- Dragon for voice to text journaling
- Weather forecast and other internet uses if cellular connection
- Books to read (Kindle for iPhone, others)
- Guidebooks for AT (Readdle docs or other apps to store and read pdfs; can get David Miller's AT Guide from him in this format; used to be able to get ALDHA's guide)
- GPS and mapping apps (many, acuterra would be first choice)
- Compass
- Reference books/apps on fauna and flora (iBird Plus; TreeID)
- Stargazing app (Planisphere)
- iFM FM radio app if you get the little radio that works with it

This is a new app, and I haven't gotten a chance to DL it yet to try it out, but it seems like a really cool idea. It's called "Leafsnap" and the basic idea is that the app uses visual recognition algorithms to identify foliage and flowers in the great outdoors. It's a partnership between Columbia University, the University of Maryland and the Smithsonian Institute. Just wanted to spread the word. http://leafsnap.com/

It allows you to take panoramic photos with your iphone. It's really a pretty sweet app.

QiWiz gave a great comprehensive list.

I also bring along a little device called the TurboCharge which runs on 2 AA batteries and basically lets you keep your iPhone's charge up when there is no AC power. Great for extended periods without electricity. However, it only works if your battery is not fully drained.

But I discovered some appropriate apps that I am sure that Apple has available

Meteor Shower App to let you know when to look up.
There are many free apps for sunset and sunrise at your current location.
Record your voice on the unit. - be careful to discover where they can be retrieved and stored.
The best was SkEye - identify stars and planets with the GPS on.
