Trying to find a book

I am trying to find a book I read years ago. It was written by a thruhiker probably in the early 60's.

What I remember;

He wore green Sears work clothes (pants and shirt)
He used a gas Primus stove and Sieg bottle
He carried a seirra cup for drinking and cooking
He ate a lot of split pea instant soup
he made a "pemmican" with peanut butter and dry milk
He had Claxton fruit cakes mail dropped the whole route

Sound familiar to anyone?

The New Appalachian Trail by Ed Garvey. Ahh, Citadel Spread: Skippy peanut butter, bacon grease, honey, and powdered milk. I've not had the courage to make a batch yet...

Garvey's 1970 thru were the subject of Appalachian Hiker and Appalachian Hiker 2 which was an updated version of the original.

Garvey's New Appalachian Trail is the story of his attempted thru in 1990 at the age of 75. By a stroke of luck I met him at Three Forks (mile 4 of the trail) during this hike.

Thanks all for your help. I have been looking for this book for years. You gave me the title and author, Google gave me the ISBN # etc. I just sent an online request to my library to request they purchase it.

As a senior citizen, on very limited income, I try to save every $ that I can.

If no; then ask about an interlibrary loan.

If your library refuses to purchase it (likely for such an old book, generally they only buy brand new books), and you can't get it elsewhere, let me know. I'll loan you mine to read, if you'd like. We old fellers need to stick together! LOL I get a lot of old and out-of-print AT books at www.alibris.com, sometimes for under $2.00. Though I admit shipping is extra. I see right now that copies of "The New Appalachian Trail" start at $1.43, for instance. Though that may not be the one you're after. I have it plus I do have "Appalachian Hiker - Adventure of a Lifetime" autographed by Garvey to Lew Pino in '72 "with happy memories of our years at Nat. Science Foundation." So, I'd want it back.

I don't remember the bacon fat, but I did mix up a batch of peanut butter, powdered milk and honey years ago. Quite tasty actually.
