I usually use my jacket in a stuff sack. Double duty gear helps keep the weight down and room in the pack.

I tried opening up some kid's arm/swim floaties so they are about the size you are talking about. The idea was to inflate them when needed and the stuff sac would keep them from shifting around. It works but not as comfy as I expected. My solution was to cut just the right size off a memory foam pillow. I keep it in the foot of my sleeping bag and use a compression sac for both.

I use my tent bag for a pillow - I usually fill it with my fleece sweater - if I get really cold and have to put that on, I just go pilllowless

Ever hear of The Packa? Great piece of raingear. Folds up internally into its own pocket and makes for a great pillow. Wrap it in something fleece and its even better.

Isn't that a little lacking as you are going into town to resupply?

Yep.... 2L platypus along with any spare clothing or rain gear in a stuff sack. The platypus gives you some volume & the clothing makes it comfortable.

That's why I don't sleep in shelters! Too many people are sleeping with their food! If you want to be be bear bait that's fine with me, but don't endanger others! I hope that you were only joking!!!

Sorry to say..He wasn't joking...He's always preaching.."sleep with your food"... some people will never learn until they have their tent ripped right out from around them.... or go to get water and return to a destroyed tent and a bear chowing down on their food...or even a mouse, rat, coon, or skunk..It doesn't have to be a bear....I think many think it makes em look brave or macho to say "I sleep with my food because I dare a bear to try to take it from me." I think it's the "Rambo" syndrome...lol..

My jacket makes a wonderful pillow when I fold it the right way and stuff it up into the hood of my bag.

I fill my 2L every camp for evening and breakfast water, plus topping off before starting the next day, so my platy is never empty at night when I might use it as a pillow. I guess I could buy a second one (I wouldn't trust it full of water under my head), but instead I opted for a Thermarest compressible pillow. Works great for me.
