I would assume that hikers have an average rate of this. as a rule i always sort out a high fiber, high yogurt diet when in town. in the woods my butt is pristine. i use handywipes and shower daily. some called me "metro" while others respected that i was living in the woods and not living in towns between trips into the woods. it's all about the mentality. and having a clean butthole.

Hikers don't have a higher rate of brown blazing. That's a common misconception, held mostly by the non-hiking community.

    how horrid is it?
It's not so horrid, once you get used to it.

    whats to do?
You just have to live with it, I hear. (From a friend, who has it.)

    prevention?
If you are pre-destined to brown-blaze, there is nothing you can do to prevent it.

I think your lack of spelling is causing confusion. It's not "brown blazeing." but brown bagging.

Brown bagging is what members do to save money for long distance hikes. Which explains why so many of us do it from time to time.

brown blazing is taking older AT routes, where the paint is fading off of the blazes on trees and telephone poles

We were talking about getting a hold of some real old maps of the AT where one could take the old routes. That to me would be interesting.
(Although the ranger at SNP said my central 1986 map should be in a museum)

its usually not the old A.T. route but the old routes old route, if that makes any sense. alot of its old road walks too, where the locals miss the hikers rolling past the house's and down the road. got a few invites to dinner in the past :-)

As some would diverge onto the wrong path, the OP gets it back on the correct path!
