Will be getting Kindle for Father's Day. Wondering what Appalachian Trail or backpacking/hiking books are available.

If it is the Kindle 2 it will support PDF files. So you can download the ATC Thru-Hiker's Companion (2011 edition) from their website if you are a member.

I am sure there are others. Amazon is a great place to go looking.

Actually, if you're a member of ALDHA, or join ($10), you can get the PDF of the Thru-Hiker's Companion for free. Otherwise it's $8.

I am going to be putting together a guidebook, kinda like the AWOL guide, that could be used on the trail. I would not recommend having your Kindle out in the rain, though.

I still need to research the legalities of it, but it would be available for the 2012 nobo season. I will be having (once I figure it out for grey scale) topographic maps for each shelter to shelter section, elevation profiles for the same, gps coords of the shelters (again, if I can figure it out), along with the data points of the water and road crossings and resupply options in the trail towns.

I need to have it completed by February, as that is when it is due for my school project.

I keep mine in a large ziploc bag and it works like a charm and is waterproof.

I enjoyed AWOL. "Then the Hail Came" was good but for some reason it took me a long time to finish it. I wrapped up "Three Hundred Zeroes" very quickly and it's the only AT book so far that's made me laugh out loud. I'm reading "Skywalker" now and Bryon's book will probably be next.
